NYU Langone cardiologist recommends treatments to combat heart conditions

    April 2, 2025 /

An NYU Langone cardiologist led nationwide efforts to update guidelines on treating acute coronary syndrome and reducing the risk of heart attacks in patients. The guidelines, which recommend that doctors use modern technologies and treatments in line with NYU’s practices, had not been updated since 2013.  The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association published the guidelines on ACS — a condition characterized by restricted blood flow to the heart — in a February report. Sunil Rao, the director of interventional cardiology at NYU Langone Health, chaired a committee tasked with writing the guidelines. Nearly 1.2 million people in the United States are hospitalized with ACS symptoms each…

NYU Langone names new dean and CEO

    April 2, 2025 /

NYU Langone Health tapped Alec Kimmelman to succeed Robert Grossman as its next CEO and dean of the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Kimmelman, who directs the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center and chairs the radiation oncology department, will begin his term in September. The medical center’s board of trustees voted unanimously to appoint Kimmelman, concluding a 10-month search for a replacement. Grossman, who has led NYU Langone since 2007, will step down as CEO and dean of the medical school in August.  “I am humbled and excited to be the next CEO and dean of NYU Langone and appreciate the confidence the Board of Trustees and the search…

NYU hit with 10 class action lawsuits following data breach

    April 1, 2025 /

NYU is facing 10 class action lawsuits alleging that it mishandled applicants’ personal information and failed to meet national cybersecurity standards after a hacker leaked files with more than 3 million names, hometowns and GPAs on the university’s website last week.  The lawsuits, each filed by an individual applicant, claim that NYU’s cybersecurity practices do not follow guidelines set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Center for Internet Security, leaving those who applied to the school at risk of identity theft. Cybersecurity experts Zack Ganot and Arnaud de Saint Méloir, who help run databreach.com, told WSN that the amount of information included in the files —…

NYU relocates conference with Israeli science institute amid protest threats

    April 1, 2025 /

NYU’s Center for Neural Science relocated an event co-hosted by an Israeli scientific institute last week to keep it “secured from disruptive protest,” the director of the center told event registrants in an email obtained by WSN. The move from the Silver Center for Arts & Science to the NYU Grossman School of Medicine came after pro-Palestinian groups on campus publicized plans to protest the meeting. At the annual event, “Progress in Neuroscience: The Forseen and the Unforseen,” neuroscience researchers from NYU and the Weizmann Institute of Science — a research school with ties to the Israeli military and weapon manufacturers amid its ongoing siege in Gaza — were set…

Student gov’t approves 2 candidates in race for chair

    April 1, 2025 /

The two candidates for next year’s Student Government Assembly chairperson are slated to begin campaigning on Thursday, after being officially approved at the group’s last meeting before spring break. The candidates are running in SGA’s first popular election, which will allow the NYU student body to vote rather than leaving it up to members of the student government. The approvals came after around an hour of deliberations, where candidates discussed how to handle political concerns on campus and advocate for international and minority students. While there were three applications for the position, one candidate did not show up and subsequently did not advance. The other two candidates will now be…
