NYU was not listed among <\/span>the 60 universities said to be investigated<\/span><\/a> by the U.S. Department of Education for complaints alleging antisemitic harassment, despite being one of 10 colleges <\/span>slated for investigation<\/span><\/a> by the Federal Task Force to Combat Antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>\n The department\u2019s Office for Civil Rights sent letters to each of the 60 colleges two days ago warning them of \u201cpotential enforcement actions\u201d if they fail to \u201cfulfill their obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to protect Jewish students on campus.\u201d NYU, George Washington University and University of California, Los Angeles are the only three schools targeted by President Donald Trump\u2019s antisemitism task force that were not included on Monday\u2019s list.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe Department is deeply disappointed that Jewish students studying on elite U.S. campuses continue to fear for their safety amid the relentless antisemitic eruptions that have severely disrupted campus life for more than a year,\u201d Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in the press release. \u201cUniversity leaders must do better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The department will investigate schools including <\/span>Columbia University<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>The New School<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>the State University of New York<\/span><\/a> \u2014 each of which have seen a rise in pro-Palestinian protests against Israel\u2019s war in Gaza since October 2023. McMahon did not specify what the department\u2019s investigations into the colleges would entail. Leo Terrell, a leading member of the U.S. Department of Justice\u2019s task force against antisemitism, <\/span>said his group will compile information<\/span><\/a> on reported incidents of antisemitism on college campuses by meeting with \u201cuniversity leadership, impacted students and staff, local law enforcement and community members,\u201d and assess whether \u201cremedial action is warranted.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Also on Monday, David Krieger \u2014 who was appointed as NYU\u2019s Title VI coordinator \u201cweeks ago,\u201d according to the university \u2014 <\/span>officially took office<\/span><\/a> after 13 years working as a senior attorney for the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s Office for Civil Rights. NYU announced the creation of the position, which involves overseeing complaints relating to racial discrimination, last July as part of <\/span>a confidential settlement<\/span><\/a> with three Jewish students who accused the university of an alleged indifference toward instances of on-campus antisemitism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n There have not been any updates concerning the task force\u2019s investigation into NYU, but a university spokesperson had told WSN that it \u201clooks forward to sharing its very considerable track-record\u201d to combatting antisemitism on campus. Days after the announcement, federal agencies at the front of the investigations announced that they would <\/span>revoke $400 million<\/span><\/a> from Columbia\u2019s research funding after administrators \u201chave not responded\u201d to <\/span>potential violations of Title VI<\/span><\/a>.
